Girdwood is located in the world's northernmost rainforest.
Girdwood sits at the northernmost latitude of North America’s temperate coastal rainforest. Many people assume the weather here matches Anchorage. It does not.
About 40 miles apart, Anchorage can be sunny while Girdwood is raining, and the other way around. Girdwood weather follows Whittier and Prince William Sound more closely than Anchorage.
The wet season runs August to February: better than a 45% chance any given day is wet. March to July is the dry season, and it is not all that dry. There is still about a 35% chance of rain.
Rain in town often means snow on the mountain.
In winter the Seward Highway can close for weather or avalanche control. Check Alaska 511 before you drive. If you are heading into the backcountry, read the daily advisory from the Chugach National Forest Avalanche Center.
