But since we are a visitor destination, we also have a large population of people that live in Anchorage and come down to Girdwood on the weekends to stay in their condos and cabins. So that means Girdwood is robust with activity on weekends and the population easily grows by a thousand people during these times.
Most of the businesses in Girdwood are privately owned. However, Alyeska Resort permanently employs quite a few people in Girdwood and also typically hires overseas seasonal workers for summer and winter positions. The average household income is approximately $123,000 according to Point2, with quite a few businesses supporting the visitor industry.
Girdwood is a very active town and you’ll see most people enjoying outdoor activities in both the winter and summer. With that said, it’s a very young town: the average age is 32 years old, and there are more men than women.
